A study for the head of Judith in Judith and Holofernes at the Galleria dell'Academia di San Luca in Rome (A. Mariuz, Piazzetta, Milan, 1982, no. 18, pl. XI) dated by Rodolfo Pallucchini to circa 1730. The Accademia di San Luca picture is the earliest of four versions of the subject, the others being in a private collection, at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica, Rome, and the Scuola Grande dei Carmini in Venice (A. Mariuz, op. cit., nos. 66, 109 and 161).
The present drawing differs from the painting in the arrangement of the hair.
