Two studies for an interior decoration with oval medallions flanked by winged caryatids: A couple being crowned with laurels by a putto; and Terpsichore playing a lyre with Euterpe holding a horn

The de la Rottière brothers specialized in painted interior decorations. They mainly worked in Versailles and Fontainebleau and were heavily influenced by the Pompeian style. Panels by the brothersare in the Getty Museum in Malibu. These latter works were painted for a room designed by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux for Jean-Baptiste Hosten, a wealthy planter from Santo Domingo, who lived in Paris. The present pair reflect the styles popularised by Michelangelo Pergolesi in Rome in the 1770s. Related grisailles by Pernotin were painted in the 1780s at Althrop, Northamptonshire (E. Croft-Murray, Decorative painting in England 1537-1837, London, 1970, p. 257, fig. 104).
