1995

Nineteen ninety-five broke a series of four weak to average vintages and together with the ninety-six vintage propelled the Bordeaux angle of the late nineties wine boom. Consequently, it became the most expensive vintage of young Bordeaux after the 1996, although the hype of the 2000 vintage has recently made both look inexpensive in comparison. A favorable, relatively drought-free early growing season was followed by a brutally hot, sunny July and August that concentrated the sugars and thickened skins of the grapes. A sufficiently dry late September and October followed light showers of early September. Although the sun shined most on merlot early on boding well for Graves and the right bank, an intense Indian summer made for sur-maturiti Cabernet Sauvignon for those who waited to pick. A huge harvest meant a strict selection was necessary to achieve quality and this favored the economic advantage of the first growth level chateaux. These wines today are monolithic, super-concentrated and firm, true vins des gardes, that are ideal for investment as well as deferred gratification. Projections indicate that 1995 may evolve similarly to the 1990 and 1970 vintages. A monumental year for Chateau Margaux, 95 was also the most complete Mouton in ages as well as the best Calon Segur ever made. Haut-Brion and the usual suspect from the right bank are also must buys.
