Lot Essay

Hippolyte Durand-Tahier was one of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, created in 1890 following internal strife and dissention among members of The Société des Artistes français. The inaugural Salon was held on 15 May 1890 at the Palais du Champs-de-Mars, originally constructed for the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Durand-Tahier became the Secretary General, a post he held from the founding day until his death in 1889. It was in this post that he nurtured his relationships with artists such as Puvis de Chavannes and Eugèen Boudin, who exhibited at the Salon du Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts from its earliest days.
