Lot Essay
With the sculptural quality of its romantic scene, this clock relates to the oeuvre of Louis-Simon Boizot (1743-1809). Not a sculptor, Boizot also created furniture mounts, vases, chenêts and of course clocks. His clientèle included most of the patrons of the last decades of the 18th Century, including Madame du Barry, the comte d'Artois or the Prince de Condé (cf. exhibition catalogue, Louis-Simon Boizot, Paris, 2001, pp. 43-44).
Another clock attributed to Boizot with restrained ormolu mounts by François Rémond (1747-1812), formerly in the Michel Meyer collection, is illustrated in J.D. Augarde, Les Ouvriers du Temps, Geneva, 1996, p. 183 fig. 147.
Grenier, a horloger who worked in Rouen in the late 18th Century, became famous for his intricate clock movements which he published.
