Lot Essay

This impressive and boldly-carved mirror is a prime example of Dutch late 17th Century carving. The small flowers and cherubs relate to foliage on the frame of Gerard Hoet's 'A Couple with Three Children' of circa 1675 while the bold acanthus also features on the frame of Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen II's 'Sara Fannius' of circa 1683 (P.J.J. van Thiel and C.J de Bruyn Kops, Framing in the Golden Age, 1995, Zwolle, pp. 309 and 339). A closely related mirror, also surmounted by cherubs holding a mirror symbolising Vanitas, was sold at Sotheby's London, 29 May 1998, lot 63.
