Each modelled as a winged putto holding aloft a foliate-wrapped vase finial with circular drip pan, on a stepped circular spreading foot with laurel-wreath cast edge

Lot Essay

These candlesticks can be related to designs by Louis Prieur of circa 1775, which were further interpreted by Jean-François Forty in circa 1780 in his 'Oeuvres de Sculpture en Bronze. Contenant Girandoles, Flambeaux, Feux, Pendules, Bras, Cartels, Baromètres, Inventées et Dessinées par J.F.F'. (H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et.al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 288, figs. 4.16.1 and 4.16.2).
A closely related pair of candlesticks was sold, Christie's, London, 23 June 1999, lot 12 (£ 8,625)
