Lot Essay

The dates in chronological order relate to the following events. In February 1828 Russia annexed Armenia. In 1831 Ivan Ferorovich Paskevich, a Russian field marshal, was named the Count of Erivan and Prince of Warsaw in honour of his courageous campaigns and honourable service to the country. Appropriately the Russian word for Warsaw is written below this followed by a stylised insignia. In 1877-78 Russia defeated the Ottomans and the 25th anniversary of this was celebrated in 1903 when this carpet was woven.
