Lot Essay

Depicting Hymen attending Juno in her cloud borne chariot with Cupid-driven peacocks, this clock evokes lyric poetry with the protectress of marriage. A clock of this model is in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (illustrated in Tardy, La Pendule Française, vol. II, Paris, 1969, p. 379).
