He succeeded W.G. Grace as England captain against Australia in 1899, after previous Australia tours with A.E. Stoddart's team in 1894/95 and 1897/98. He took his own team to Australia in 1901/02 and continued to captain England in 1902 and 1909. As opening batsman throughout his career, he reached 1,000 runs eight times in a season in England, and once in Australia. His 424 against Somerset at Taunton in 1895 remains the highest score in a first-class match in England. He hit five Test hundreds, four in Australia and one, his highest - 140 - at Trent Bridge in 1905. MacLaren later managed the weekly magazine 'Cricket', which ceased publication in 1914.
