containing nineteen photographs, the majority showing sitters with rackets, mounted on green card, bound in limp red calf, front cover blind stamped with rampant lion crest, decorative corner pieces on both covers; and two loose photographs, showing scenes of tennis courts and players, circa 1880s, (faded), 9¼ x 11¼in. (23.5 x 28.5cm.) and smaller, mounted. (3)

Lot Essay

The photographs in the above album were taken by J.W. Penfold who lived at "Penfolds" in Haslemere (previously called "Courts Hill"), Surrey. The sitters include Dr F. Yates and his daughters, and Charles H. Whymper (1853-1941), a wood engraver, landscape and animal draughtsman and painter.
