"The Heart of a Champion" follows the story of Jack Merrill, a promising American college athlete. Merrill is coached by Pop Jackson at Southern California University. Jackson trains Merrill to become a world-class athlete, and takes him to the Olympic Games to compete in the 200 metres. Due to a poor heart condition, Merrill struggles in training for the Olympic race, and his condition worsens in a dramatic final race.
It is believed "The Heart of a Champion" was written by Tilden in the late 1940s during his time in prison, a place where pen and ink were banned. The "Heart of a Champion" was never published or produced. A few tennis references are made with one scene at a Mixed Doubles Olympic Tennis match and Tilden names one character "Lacoste".
