JAMES BAILLIE FRASER (1783-1856)

Journal of a Tour through part of the Snowy Range of the Himala Mountains and to the sources of the River Ganges. London: Rodwell and Martin, 1820. 4° (302 x 230mm). Folding engraved map. (Map spotted, some spotting of text.) 19th-century half calf (joints and head of spine rather crudely repaired, recased with new endpapers).

FINE COPY OF FRASER'S MAGNIFICENT AND RARE HIMALAYAN VIEWS. A truly grand plate book, Fraser's Himala was classed at the time with Daniell's Oriental Scenery and Salt's Views in Abyssinia, costing 20 guineas to subscribers, and an even more princely 25 guineas to non subscribers. The plates are printed on thick paper watermarked 'J. Whatman Turkey Mill,' 1822. The work was publised without text but a copy of Fraser's account of his journey, issued by the same publisher at the same date for either 3 or 4 guineas, is included in this lot. Fraser arrived at Calcutta in 1813, and went on his expedition to the Gahrwal Himalayas two years later, becoming the first European to reach Gangotri, and making sketches of the mountain scenery en route. Abbey Travel II, 498; Howgego II, F24.
