HUGUES KRAFFT

A travers le Turkestan Russe. Paris: Hachette, 1902. 4° (330 x 245mm). Title printed in black and blue, 70 heliogravure plates by Dujardin, large phototype illustrations, all after the author, opening initials in red. Original onlaid green morocco covers with arbaesques stamped in gilt, flat red morocco spine with repeated arabesques and brown morocco lettering-piece, top edge gilt, others uncut, patterned endpapers and vellum sleeves with gilt arabesques (extremities rubbed, some scuff marks and staining to covers). Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY (half-title inscribed by the author, but with recipient's name erased) -- purchased from Lonchamp, Lausanne, December 1926, for frs. S. 150.

A FINE COPY OF A RARE WORK, comprising a stunning photographic record of the Turkish-speaking lands of central Asia, an area almost equal in size to Europe. Although the area had recently been opened up by railway, it was still a 15 day journey from Paris to Tashkent by the quickest route. As the author states in the preface, he finished by staying there many months, 'charmé par la beauté des hautes montagnes et des florissantes vallées, par la splendeur des monuments du passé, par le coloris extraordinaire des costumes, et par l'attrait d'une population éminemment pittoresque, -- autant de sujets qui me procurèrent des impressions plus vives qu'aucune de celles déjà éprouvées dans d'autres pays d'Orient'.
