JOSEPH PITTON DE TOURNEFORT (1656-1708)
Relation d'un Voyage du Levant. Lyon: Anisson et Posuel, 1717. 3 volumes, 8° (189 x 115mm). 152 engraved plates and maps after Aubriet (of ?153), some folding. With the 2-leaf 'approbation' inserted before the 'avertissement' in vol. I. (Light browning of text, plate opposite F4r in vol. II slightly affected by paper fault). Contemporary French calf gilt, covers with double fillet enclosing a central lozenge, gilt spine compartments, speckled edges (some chipping, extremities a little worn).
Second edition, following publication of the 2-volume 4to edition in Paris in the same year. Tournefort was a travelling botanist who set out for the Levant in 1700, accompanied by the artist Claude Aubriet, whose drawings were engraved for this work, and the German botanist Gundelsheimer. He spent two years exploring Greece and visited Constantinople, the borders of the Black Sea, Armenia and Georgia. His Relation consists of 22 letters sent to his patron, the Comte de Pontchartrain. Copies of this edition have been recorded with both 152 and 153 engraved plates and maps. Brunet V, 903. (3)
