Venice: 1561-1565. Three double-sheet engraved maps with one separate small southern extension. Titles set in 'tablet' cartouches, compass roses, scale bars, seas in stipple, land with mountains, rivers, lakes and principal towns, window mounts.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MAPS OF ASIA. The first accurately drawn large maps of the continent, that became the basic standard for the geography throughout the 16th Century. Gastaldi used names derived from Marco Polo's account for this map. This copy of the 1561 issue includes one of the southern extensions issued by Forlani in 1565 (some copies have two small extensions).
