JAN HUYGEN VAN LINSCHOTEN (1563-1611) AND HENDRIK FLORIS VAN LANGREN (c.1574-1648)

[South East Asia] Exacta & accurata delineatio cum orarum maritimarum ... in regionibus China, Cochinchina, Camboja sive Champa, Syao, Malacca, Arracan & Pegu. [Amsterdam]: 1596. Hand-coloured engraved map of Southeast Asia by van Langren extending from Burma to New Guinea, Beach (Australia) to Japan. 410 x 540mm. Explanatory title set in a strapwork cartouche at upper right, scale bar on central cartouche, the map decorated with two elaborate windroses and rhumbline system, seas with battling ships, whales and sea monsters, the land showing mountain ranges, major towns and rivers decorated with elephants and other strange animals. (Some old fold marks). Window mount.

A fine copy of this important map of China and Southeast Asia, first published in Linschoten's Itinerario of 1596 (although the map is dated 1595, the privilege being granted in 1594). Linschoten's map was made as he says 'from the most correct charts that the Portuguese pilots nowadays make use of'. Most of Japan and Southeast Asia is based on Fernao Vaz Dourado, China from Baruda, and the Philippines from Bartolomen Lasso's charts. Linschoten lived in Spain as a merchant from 1579 and from 1583-89 as secretary to the Portuguese Archbishop in Goa. Here he gathered copies of the secret sailing guides and charts used by the Portuguese. Lutz 1Z; Suarez pp. 178-179.
