SIR JOHN MACDONALD KINNEIR (1782-1830)
A Geographical Memoir of the Persian Empire, accompanied by A Map. London: John Murray, 1813. 4° (304 x 235mm). Large two-part folding engraved map hand-coloured in outline and linen-backed, as issued. (Light spotting to map, and first and last few leaves.) [With:]
SIR JOHN MALCOLM (1769-1833)
The History of Persia, from the most early period to the present time: Containing an account of the Religion, Government, Usages, and Character of the Inhabitants of that Kingdom. London: John Murray and Longman and Co., 1815. 2 volumes, 4° (305 x 240 mm). Folding linen-backed map and 22 plates. (Without half-titles, some plates and map with scattered spotting, occasional light soiling.) The two works uniformly bound in contemporary tree-calf, gilt rules and fleurons to sides, spine tooled in blind and gilt (sides lightly rubbed, small repair to spine of Kinneir).
FIRST EDITIONS, with the rare two-part folding map accompanying this copy of Kinneir. When chosen as envoy to Persia, Malcolm was the first person since Elizabeth's reign to undertake such a mission. Malcolm travelled extensively in Persia in the course of three different diplomatic missions, and sent officers including Pottinger and Kinneir to produce reports on other parts of the country. Kinneir's Geographical Memoir, dedicated to Malcolm, includes an appendix describing routes between the principal towns. The two works were seen as complementary by their original owner, who bound them uniformly reserving space in the binding of Malcolm for Kinneir's map to be laid-in. 'Malcolm writes well and his history... is still worthwhile reading today. The parts on the beginning of the Qajar dynasty and the system of government are excellent' (Ghani, p. 236). Ghani p. 239; not in Atabey or Blackmer.
