SIR WILLIAM OUSELEY (1767-1842)

Travels in various countries of the East; more particularly Persia. London: Rodwell and Martin, printed for the author by Henry [vol. I] or Priscilla [vol.II-III] Hughes of Brecknock, 1819-1823. 3 volumes, 4° (271 x 215mm). 4 folding engraved maps, 82 plates including 16 double-page, one with a touch of hand-colouring, and 4 folding. (Occasional spotting, more so on plates in vol.III). Contemporary calf, sides and spines ruled in gilt, red and green morocco labels, marbled edges (small areas of surface loss, light rubbing).

FIRST EDITION. Sir William accompanied his brother, Sir Gore Ouseley, as private secretary, on his mission to Persia. By way of preparation Ouseley had lived some months in 1810 in the house of the Persian envoy, Mirza Abul Hasan, in London, where he learned to speak Persian. Ouseley provides much information on the archaeology, manners and customs of the Middle East, and includes descriptions of Madeira, Rio de Janeiro, Bombay, the Persian Gulf, Isfahan, Persepolis, the Ruins of Rai, Constantinople and Smyrna. The plates include a double-page view of the British ambassador's residence in Rio. Borba de Moraes II, p. 642; Ghani p.291.

(Plates spotted, with some offsetting on facing leaves.) Contemporary calf, sides with gilt rules, flat spine gilt with central radiant star in each compartment, marbled edges (sides rubbed). FIRST EDITION of Ouseley's treatise on the various styles of Persian handwriting. Ouseley's valuable collection of Persian manuscripts was sold in 1831; the catalogue, written by Ouseley himself, describes 724 manuscripts.

Contemporary tree calf, sides with gilt rules, flat spine gilt with central rosette tool in each compartment, marbled edges (light rubbing). Provenance: Duke of Abercorn (inscription). FIRST EDITION. The various articles gathered and edited by Ouseley in The Oriental Collection include: a full page hand-coloured ornithological etching of a Fighting Bulbul of Bengal, extracts from Persian manuscripts, Persian sonnets, sketches of Persian zoology as translated from the Ajaïeb al Makhloucat, various articles on Indian music, song, and instruments, descriptions of the sculptures at Beysitoun, Kurdistan, a consideration of Hebrew philology, and a description of the Grotto of Camoens at Macao.
