RENÉ AUGUSTIN CONSTANTIN DE RENNEVILLE (1650-1723)
Recueil des Voyages qui ont servi a l'etablissement et au progrez de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales formée dans les Provinces-Unies des Païs Bas, Nouvelle Edition, revûë par l'Auteur & considerablement augmentée. Rouen: Pierre Cailloué, 1725. 12 volumes, 12° (161 x 90mm). Titles printed in red and black, with royal privilege at end of volume 7, seven engraved frontispieces and 66 engravings, the majority of these folding, including 26 folding maps. Contemporary calf, brown and black morocco labels, gilt, to spines, edges sprinkled red (head of a few spines chipped, a few joints slightly cracked).
Reneville's translation of Commelin's Begin ende Voortgang vande Vereenigde Neederlantsche Geoctroyeerde oost-Indische Compagnie, adding a number of maps and plates to the 5 volume edition first published in Amsterdam between 1702-1706. The present set includes the 2 supplemental volumes of Gautier Schouten's voyage to the East Indies. The engravings include a large folding map of South East Asia, and numerous views: Fort Zeelandia, Taiwan, etc. Renneville left France for Holland in 1699 as a consequence of his Protestant principles, and on his return 3 years later was denounced as a spy and imprisoned in the Bastille where he remained until 1713. Released through the intercession of Queen Anne, he made his way to England where he wrote and published his Histoire de la Bastille. Landwehr 254; Sabin 68455.
