FIRST EDITION. William Francklin, the eldest son of the classical scholar Thomas Francklin, was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1782 he joined the East India Company as a cadet, and he enjoyed a distinguished military career before he was invalided out in 1815, when he became Regulating Officer at Bhalgalpur. In tandem with his military career, Francklin established a strong reputation as an oriental scholar: in 1786 he made a tour of Persia lasting eight months (part of which he spent living at Shiraz with a Persian family), and published his Observations Made on a Tour from Bengal to Persia in 1788, and his other works include historical, geographic and theological works on India and translations from Persian. The History of the Reign of Shah-Aulum is based, as the author states in the preface, on information gathered during his long residence in India (especially whilst undertaking surveys in the country); additionally, 'the perusal of the several Persian manuscripts named in the Appendix, and particularly the Shah Aulum Nameh, (a history of the reign of the present king) written by Gholaum Ali, a learned native, afforded the author ample materials for relating such transactions as took place within the authority and influence of the court at Delhi' (pp. xviii-xix). Brunet II, col. 1376; ESTC T145523; Lowndes I, p. 834.
