Histoire Naturelle at Politique du Royaume de Siam. Divisée en quatre parties. Paris: Pierre le Mercier for Claude Barbin, 1688. 4° (248 x 184mm). Errata leaf at end. Engraved leaf of sheet-music, one folding engraved map, 6 engraved headpieces, 6 engraved initials. (Two repaired tears to map, the final headpiece shaved into the plate area, but not affecting the image.) Contemporary French speckled calf, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (neat repairs to the corners and the head and foot of the spine). Provenance: Sir Robert Sheffield, bart. (Normanby Hall. Lincolnshire, armorial bookplate).
RARE FIRST EDITION OF GERVAISE'S EARLY ACCOUNT OF THAILAND. The work is presented in four sections: the first a physical description of the country (including a fine folding engraved map of the region), the second on the customs, laws and costume of the inhabitaants, the third on their religion and the fourth on King Narai the Great (who ruled from 1656-1688), his court and kingdom. Cordier Indosinica 721; cf.Satow 62 (the 1689 reprint, the present edition is mentioned as only being known from a reference by Lanier).
