THEODORE DE BRY (1528-1598) AND WILLEM LODEWIJCKSZ
Nova Tabula Insularum Javae. [Frankfurt 1598]. Hand-coloured engraved map of South-East Asia by de Bry after Lodewijcksz, 400 x 460mm. Title set in an elaborate strapwork cartouche, scale bar at lower left, four half compass roses decorating the seas, the map decorated with rhumb lines, rocks and shoals marked, the fleet of Cornelis de Houtman shown in the Java sea, window mount.
An extremely attractive map of the region drawn up by de Bry directly from Willem Lodewijcksz's secret map drawn up in 1598. Lodewijckcz was on the Houtman expedition 1595-97, the first Dutch fleet to the East Indies. The expedition gathered first hand information on the Sunda Strait, north coast of Java and Bali. On their return to Holland in 1597, the information of their discoveries was kept secret by the Amsterdam merchants. By the end of 1598, the single sheet chart of Lodewijcksz had been published in Amsterdam, and de Bry soon acquired a copy and republished it in his Petits Voyages. Suarez Early Mapping of Southeast Asia (pp 180-181).
