NEWSPAPER IN ANNAMESE
Gia Dinh Báo. Saigon: November 1866-February 1870. 45 issues only, bound in one volume, 2° (383 x 248mm). 3 issues printed on pink paper. (Old creasing, three issues with vertical tears about 160mm. long.) Contemporary roan-backed marbled boards (spine torn with loss, hinges spliting), contained within a modern red morocco box, titled in gilt on the 'spine'.
VERY RARE: A SIGNIFICANT RUN OF THE FIRST PERIODICAL IN THE ANNAMESE LANGUAGE PRINTED IN SAIGON. The western names that appear at the end of each issue appear to be the editors: E. Potteaux; G. Ohier; G. Janneau; 'Aldricus Lottin'; and Laugier. Two of these (Potteaux and Janneau) are mentioned by Cordier as having contributed to periodicals and published works between about 1869 and 1914, with the most appearing in the period between 1870 and 1880. Their work on the present publication would therefore appear to have been some of their earliest. The present compilation is not bound in chronological order, but includes the following: 1 issue from 1866; 7 issues from 1867; 3 issues from 1868; 30 issues from 1869; 4 issues from 1870. Cf. Cordier Indosinica 1759 (this periodical, but from 1880-1888); not in the NUC, or the RLIN or OCLC databases.
