PEDRO MURILLO VELARDE (1696-1753)
Historia de la Provincia de Philipinas de la Compañia de Jesus. Segunda parte, que comprehende los progresos de esta provincia desde el año de 1616 el de 1716. Printed on thin paper, title in red and black within decorative woodcut border, engraved emblematic frontispiece by Laureano Atlas, folding engraved map of the Philippines by Nicolás Bagay. (The loosely inserted folding map washed and neatly repaired, without ?blanks 4 and 5N4, repairs to 10 leaves; title, frontispiece and first leaf detached and with old repairs, small tears to a number of leaves.) 19th-century roan-backed marbled boards (boards detached, worn). Provenance: Jesuit College, Sassari, Sardinia (AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION: "Para el Colegio de la Compa. de Ihs de Saceri Dono Authoris"); Father Laval (bookplate "Bib. Dom. Laval. S.J.").
AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of "one of the most notable works to have been printed in the Philippines" (Retana), rare with both the plate and map. It is a continuation of Francisco Colin's Labor Evangelica published in Madrid in 1663 (hence segunda parte). The fine map is a reduced copy of Murillo's map (originally published in 1734). The engravers Bagay and Atlas, both Tagalog, were well regarded, Bagay in particular being considered the outstanding engraver of his generation. Palau 186215; Retana 285; Sabin 51449.
