Manila: Ramirez and Giraudier, 1 March 1859-15 May 1860. 28 parts in one volume [without nos. 3 and 9 from the second series], 4° (314 x 215mm). 22 tinted lithographs by Giraudier after C.W. Andrews. (A very few small marginal repairs, occasional spotting, two leaves with a few spots of ink.) Red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, edges gilt. Provenance: a few captions translated in French by an early reader.
Ilustracion Filipina includes some of the earliest examples of Philippine lithography. These lithographs, after C.W. Andrews (see lots 159 and 160) consist of a number of portraits and views, including the volcano at Albay and the Botocan waterfalls. According to W.E. Retana this work was already rare in 1877 (Aparato Bibliográfico de la Historia General de Filipinas, Madrid, 1906, no.4472). Palau VII 118306.
