[The Pacific Ocean] Maris Pacifici, quod vulgo Mar del Zur. [Antwerp]: 1589 [or later]. Hand-coloured engraved map: 344 x 505mm, title and scale bar set in, elaborate baroque strapwork cartouches, the central Pacific decorated with Magellan's galleon Victoria, window mount.
'One of the most important maps that appeared in the Ortelius atlas, this was THE FIRST PRINTED MAP TO BE DEVOTED TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, the discovery of which is remembered by the depiction, with legend, of Ferdinand Magellan's ship the Victoria... one of Ortelius's most desirable maps' (Burden, The Mapping of North America 74).
