A SUPERB SET OF THE SECOND AND BEST EDITION of this key work, a magnificent history of New Spain by the Franciscan provincial superior of Mexico, corrected for this edition by Barcia Carballido y Zúñiga and dated by him in the Preface, January, 1725. The work makes particular use of the unpublished manuscript of Gerónimo Mendieta who reached Mexico in 1554 and spent his life among the Indians. His highly critical work on the exploitation of the Indians by the colonists was not published separately until 1870. This is also the primary source for Sebastian Vizcaino's 1596 and 1620 expeditions and voyages of discovery to California, and further includes the expeditions of Juan de Oñate Coronado, and the 1684 voyage of Miguel López de Legazpi to the Philippines. Most copies of the first edition, Seville, 1615, were lost in a shipwreck on the voyage to Mexico. Palau 335033; Sabin 96212; Medina, Hispano-Americana 2491; Hill 1707. (3)
