Voyage Autour du Monde par les mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de La Corvette de Sa majesté La Favorite exécutée pendant les années 1830, 1831, 1832. Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1835. 2° (482 x 323mm). 72 hand-coloured aquatint plates, a number of these with La Favorite blind-stamp. (Text leaves spotted, plates with occasional marginal spotting.) Contemporary half calf, flat spine tooled in gilt and blind, orange calf labels (extremities rubbed), modern morocco backed cloth box.
FIRST EDITION. 'PERHAPS THE FINEST SERIES OF PLATES OF ANY OF THE PICTURESQUE VOYAGES' (Sabin); 'SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLATES OF THE KIND IN EXISTENCE' (Borba de Moraes). These fine hand-coloured plates were printed by Finot, under de Sainson's supervision, from engravings primarily by Himely after Sauvergne and Paris. La Favorite visited Madras, Pondichéry, Cochinchina, Tonkin, and the Philippines, before setting sail for Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. Laplace crossed the Pacific on his return, past Valparaiso, Cape Horn and along the coast of Brazil. 'The purpose of this voyage was to show the French flag in eastern and other waters, in order to re-establish French influence over Indo-China and the Pacific. The voyage was also very successful scientifically' (Hill). The Pacific survey maps and collections assembled during the voyage became famous during that period.
