ARNOLDUS MONTANUS (c.1625-1683)

Denckwürdige Gesandtschafften der Ost-Indischen Geselschaft in den Vereinigten Niederländern an unterschiedliche Keyser von Japan. Amsterdam: Jacob Meurs, 1669. 2° (304 x 196mm). Title in red and black, with final blank. Engraved additional title, folding map, 24 double page or folding plates, 70 half-page illustrations. (A few wormholes to first few gatherings, light even browning to last gathering, Yy3 with small marginal loss.) Contemporary calf, spine gilt, edges red (light rubbing to extremities, spine slightly chipped at head). Provenance: a few annotations in German by an early reader.

FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN of this account of two embassies to Japan sent by the Dutch East India Company, together with descriptions of the people, their customs and the country. It is based in part on the diaries of a number of Company employees, and also considers various curiosities: Japanese wines, murder, whaling, necromancers, wrestlers, etc. The engravings include views of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kagoshima, and possibly the earliest printed view of Deshima island. An edition in Dutch was published in the same year and an English translation by John Ogilby appeared in the following year. Cordier Japonica 384; Lipperheide Lf2.
