A Collection of three Natural History Albums devoted to Fish, Insects and Birds. [Japan: circa 1900]. Three volumes, 8vo (240 x 187mm). Fish: 50 watercolours each named in Japanese at upper right or left. Insects: 50 watercolours each named in Japanese at upper right or left. Birds: 48 watercolours each named in Japanese at upper right or left. Each album in original silk wrappers; spine stitched (corners and edges lightly rubbed).
A fine collection of Japanese watercolours: birds, including ducks, parrots and other exotic species in flight or perched on branches or rocks. The fish include carp, puffer fish, eels, sea horses and swordfish. The insects, including beetles, butterflies and moths, are shown in aerial or side view. These watercolours may have been conceived as models to be used for the decoration of fans, furniture, ceramics and other objets d'art. (3)
