ABRAHAM ORTELIUS (1527-1598)
Chinae, olim Sinarum regionis nova descriptio. auctore Ludovico Georgio. [Amsterdam]: 1584, but after 1588. Hand-coloured engraved map, plate size: 365 x 470mm, 3 elaborate cartouches, incorporating cherubs and birds. (Some light offsetting or slight surface soiling, a few minor repairs at centrefold).
A landmark in the mapping of China, the first map to appear in a European atlas, 'this map remained the standard type for the interior of China for over sixty years' (Tooley). After the manuscript map made by the Portuguese Jesuit, Ludovicus Georgius, Ortelius's map appeared in the Additamentum III to his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Maps published between 1588 and 1595 bear the words 'Las Philippinas' above Sinus Magnus, as here. See Tooley, Maps and Map-Makers, p.106, and M.P.R. van den Broecke, Ortelius Atlas Maps, 164.
