[China] The Kingdome of China newly augmented by I.S.. London: Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell, 1626 [but later, c.1676]. Hand-coloured engraved map: 395 x 515mm, decorated borders with eight costumed figures at each side and four views on upper border. A few repaired tears, small loss restored at lower edge, window mount.
An early and well-known European image of China, from Speed's A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World. The scenes in the upper border represent 'ye maner of their trauelling by la[n]d', a bird's eye view of Macao and of Quinzay, and 'the manner of their execution'. The costumed figures depict Chinese men and women, Japanese soldiers and people of Pegu.
