EXCELLENT COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of this important work on the theological aspects of Chinese religion, politics, philosophy and the ethics of Confucius. The prefect of the Dominican mission sent Fernandez de Navarette to Rome to dispute with the Jesuits in the 'Rites Controversy', the Dominicans being strongly opposed to the permissive ruling of 1656. This work is credited with bringing the Chinese 'Rites Controversy' to public notice in Europe. Book Six contains Navarette's travels in Mexico, Macao, China, India, Madagascar and the Philippines, where he was professor of divinity at the Colegio de Santo Thomas. A second volume was completed but seized by the Inquisition before printing was completed and few copies survived. The manuscript for a third volume was never published. Cordier Sinica 31; Lust 21; Brunet IV, 24; Palau 89431; Medina, Hispano-Americana 1611; Sabin 52095.
