GEORGE LEONARD STAUNTON (1737-1801)
An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China ... taken chiefly from the papers of his Excellency the Earl of Macartney. London: by W. Bulmer and Co. for G. Nicol, 1797. 3 volumes: including 2° atlas volume (563 x 410mm) and two 4° volumes of text (320 x 248mm). Text with 2 engraved portrait frontispieces, 26 engravings, including one full page of a tea plant; atlas with 35 engraved maps and plates only (of 44). (Volume 2 frontispiece with dampstain and marginal scattered spotting, title and a few leaves browned; atlas with occasional mostly marginal spotting.) Contemporary tree-calf, flat spines gilt, black morocco labels to spines (atlas rebacked, corners repaired, joints of text volumes cracked, extremities lightly rubbed, small area of surface loss at spine head of volume 1). Provenance: Duke of Abercorn (inscription on front paste-down).
FIRST EDITION of Staunton's account of this important mission, conceived on a grand scale, whereby Britain sought to improve diplomatic and commercial relations with China. The narrative takes in numerous places visited en route: Madeira, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Java, Sumatra, Cochin-China, etc. 'Relation très-intéressante' (Brunet V, 525); 'a most interesting account of Chinese manners and customs at the close of the eighteenth century' (Cox I, 197).
