Lot Essay

The sitter has previously been identified as John Robert Morrison (1814-1843), the translator, Chinese Secretary and interpreter, the son of Robert Morrison (1782-1834), the first Protestant missionary to China, and first translator of the Bible into Chinese. The present portrait, however, compares little to the Chinnery portrait of John Robert, for which see P.Conner, George Chinnery 1774-1852 Artist of India and the China Coast, Woodbridge, 1993, pl. 154 (corporate collection, Hong Kong).
