This fine panorama of the Bund extends from 'Native City', the Old City or 'Nanshi' (Southern City) on the extreme left, to the 'Dock Company' and wharves on the extreme right, to the north of Suzhou Creek. The view centres on the British Settlement, flanked by the French Concession (captioned 'French town') to the south and the American zone (captioned 'American Town') to the north, the latter consolidated with the British Settlement in 1863 and subsequently known as the International Settlement.

The panorama is captioned in pencil from the left: 'Native City French War Ship German mail steamer China Merchant Cos warehouses Junks French Mail steamer French town/French Gunboat/French consulate/River steamer/St Josephs Church Time Ball/English (P & O) Mail Steamer English Town begins English Clubhouse Late Russell & Co now bank English Town/English Gun Boats/Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank Custom House Bank Opium hulk Oriental Bank Central Hotel/River police hulk/Jardine Matheson & Co Masonic Hall English Consulate public gardens Presbyterian Church English town finish Garden Bridge Astor House Hotel German Consulate American Town Japanese Consulate Orphanage Chapel Church wharves Dock Company wharves'.

The 'Time Ball' on the Bund gives a terminus post quem of 1884, the date the signal and time station (the latter a mast with a big ball that rose to half- and top-mast and back to mark noon each day) was erected.
