Shanghai: 'printed for the editor at the Office of the "North-China Herald"', March-May 1859. 2 issues (only, nos. 1 and 3), 4° (285 x 222mm). (Scattered light spotting, some creases and tearing.) Original printed wrappers (lightly spotted, some creasing and tearing from folding). Provenance: Wheelock (early pencilled inscriptions on upper wrappers).
A RARE, MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY, SHANGHAI-PUBLISHED PERIODICAL. As the title suggests, the Shanghae Chronicle was a light-hearted publication, offering a pastiche of contemporary publications in its jocular coverage of mercantile, social, political and other matters: 'Summary. There have been no events of very great importance during the past month,--the World's course and progress seem to have undergone no interruption or alteration. To the best of our knowledge the sun has risen much as usual from day to day, and the Moon has put in an appearance with her proverbial punctuality' (no.1, p.[1]). (2)
