[WALTER HENRY MEDHURST (1796-1857)]
A Glance at the Interior of China obtained during a journey through the Silk and Green Tea Districts. Taken in 1845. [?Shanghai: Mission Press, 1849]. 8° in fours (210 x 133mm). Small format letterpress note from the editor bound after tiitle. 8 woodcut plates and plans (6 folding), 2 folding woodcut maps, 8 full-page woodcut illustrations. (2 folding maps browned, some spotting and discolouration of paper, marginal tear to title and first text leaf). Original green cloth, covers blocked in blind, spine blocked in blind with title in gilt, yellow-glazed endpapers (spine discoloured and repaired at head aand foot). Provenance: M.A. Butterworth (early signature, numerous corrections and marginal notes).
FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE. Cordier notes that this work was issued as the first number of The Chinese Miscellany. The ...Miscellany eventually included four numbers, all by Medhurst. The title Cordier transcribes appears to come from the cover of the binding and includes the place and date of publication. Medhurst wrote a number of works on China and the Far East, including China (London: 1838) and General Description of Shanghae and its Environs (Shanghai: 1850). The present work describes a journey he made between 27 March and 14 May 1845, disguised as a 'native', but also includes a lengthy digression on silk production as well as careful observations of the everyday life of the people.
