JOHN REDDIE BLACK (EDITOR)
The Far East. A monthly journal, illustrated with photographs. Published simultaneously in Tokio [sic.], Japan; Shanghai, China; and in Hongkong. Shanghai: printed for the Proprietor, at the 'Far East' Printing Office, [October 1877-March 1878, May-July 1878]. 10 original parts only (New Series, vol.III, nos.4-6; vol.IV, nos.1-3, 5-6, vol.V, nos.1-2). 1 woodcut plate, 54 mounted albumen print photographs (including 4 portraits, 4 of Japanese interest, 6 of Taiwan and 40 of Chinese interest). (35 plates somewhat faded, occasional light spotting.) Original variously-coloured paper wrappers, letterpress titles on the upper outer covers (occasional light soiling, some small tears to backstrips).
A SUBSTANTIAL RUN OF THE VERY RARE 'NEW SERIES' OF THIS IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPHICALLY ILLUSTRATED PERIODICAL. The six volumes of the first series were published fortnightly by Black in Yokohama between 1870 and 1875. Black then moved operations to Shanghai, and the periodical was re-launched as a monthly in 1876. There are a number of auction records for the first Yokohama series, but none for the present 'new series'. The periodical is a fascinating mixture of literature and current affairs, with fine, mainly topographical, photographs - the images often relating to the surrounding text. None of the photographs have photographer's credits, but the photographers who advertise in the journal include Thomas Child, 'Mr. Edwards', W. Saunders and L.F. Fisler. (10)
