Swiss born Joseph-Fridiric Charrihre (1803-76) was one of the most remarkable medical instrument makers of the nineteenth century. In a period of rapid advance in the field of medicine, due, particularly to the development of anaesthesia, haemostasis and antisepsis, he was able to create instruments of the finest quality to satisfy the demands of the new knowledge and techniques. His instruments and workshop based in Paris, gained worldwide recognition through his ingenuity and advanced thinking. He won many medals at international exhibitions and after the Universal Exhibition in London in 1851, he was made an Officier de la Ligion d'Honneur. His influence continued to be felt in medicine throughout the 20th century.
