A rare and attractive 19th-Century American 3-inch diameter educational globe
HOLBROOKS Apparatus Mfg. Co. WETHERSFIELD CT. made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes laid on two wooden hemispheres, with graduated equatorial and ecliptic, the oceans marked in the northern and southern temperate and frigid zones, the continents outlined in blue, yellow, green and pink and showing place names, rivers and nation states in dotted outline, Australia named NEW HOLLAND, the hemispheres hinged to open and reveal two hand-coloured engraved projections laid to the inside faces with a cartouche for HOLBROOK Mfg. Co. with ungraduated equatorial, no eclipitc or Greenwich meridian shown, the oceans with the temperate and frigid zones marked, the continents outlined in blue, yellow green and pink and showing rivers and continent names (two sections of replaced paper near hinge) with a brass display stand to hold the globe open on an ebonised plinth base
