Lot Essay

The 4-4-0 was built continuously through the end of the 19th century. It handled both freight and passenger assignments, and its use among railroads was nearly universal - so much so that it acquired the name "American Standard," or simply "American." In 1884, 60 percent of all new U.S. steam locomotives were 4-4-0s.
