A static display model of the schooner yacht America
Anonymous; American, 20th century
A solid hull model with black painted topsides, and a copper clad bottom. The deck of the model is fitted with a number of details, including: anchors, anchor davits, deck eyes, turning blocks, skylights, ship's boats on davits, companionways, windlass, tiller, etc. The model is rigged with two masts, standing and running rigging, a full suit of linen sails, American yacht ensign and name pennant. The model is mounted on a pair on brass pedestals and displayed in glass case with brass trim and a mahogany base and stand.

Lot Essay

The first contest for the America's Cup was sponsored by the Royal Squadron as part of an international exhibition in London in Yacht 1851. Members of the New York Yacht Club competed in the race with the 170-ton schooner America, which in August 1851 sailed against 14 yachts from the Royal Yacht Squadron in a race around the Isle of Wight. America won the prize, a silver cup. In 1857 the cup was presented to the New York Yacht Club, to be held as a world trophy; thereafter it became known as the America's Cup
