A hardwood folding horseshoeback folding chair, Jiaoyi, late 18th/early 19th century
the frame in two distinct sections carved with generously curving arms and back forming a horseshoe-shape with a broad curving vertical panel forming the back splat carved with pierced motifs of a qilin among scrolls and a small sinuous dragon medallion above, a straight iron strut formed as a bamboo stem bracing the curving arm on the leg, a soft mat seat with a front seat stretcher carved with confronted dragons separated by interlocking tendrils, the front legs with a hinged flat foot support, all parts with bronze sheet mounts -- 41½in. (105.5cm.) high.
