A gilt and mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer brush and cover, Wanli six-character mark and of the period
the shaft and cover finely gilt and inlaid on a black lacquered ground, each with a five-clawed dragon and a phoenix among blossoming branches and scrolling foliage, with stylised chysanthumum flowerheads to both ends, the reign mark enclosed within a rectangular cartouche to the shaft, the rims with pewter caps -- 9¾in. (24.8cm.) long, Japanese fitted wood box.
