Lot Essay

This lot is only one half of the exhibition shawl. Amadee Couder, whose initials figure along with those of the weavers in one of the flags flying from a minaret, is probably the most well known shawl designer of the first half of the 19th century. His Nou Rouz and Ispahan shawls of the 1830s and 1840s are weaving tour de forces.
