A FINE KOBAKO [small box]
Edo Period (Late 17th - early 18th Century)
The almost square mokko-shaped box, for folded paper packets of incense, the black ground decorated in gold takamaki-e with kirikane mixed with small irregular pieces of gold, usu-niku-takamaki-e and togidashi-e depicting the moon visible over the brow of a hill, at the foot of which are rocks and shinobugusa [hare's foot fern] on the banks of a stream, two gin-ashide utamoji [inlaid silver poem characters] incorporated into the design, drops of dew on the shinobugusa are ginbyo [domed silver nail-heads], silver cord-ring bosses, fundame rims, gyobu nashiji interior, black lacquer base, a small chip to one lobe, slight old wear
