A RARE KODAIJI-MAKIE KOBAKO CONTAINING FIVE KOGO [incense containers]
Momoyama Period (Late 16th Century)
The black lacquer ground decorated in hiramaki-e, nashiji, tsukegaki and harigaki with autumn flowers, including chrysanthemums, Chinese bellflowers and grasses, the five kogo similarly decorated, the names of incenses inscribed on each of the covers, takimono, Jo-no-jin, chioku saku, chu-no-jin and tsuke-fushi
Kobako: 7.7cm. high
Kogo: 5.1cm. high

Lot Essay

Kodaiji-makie is the name given to the lacquer-wares favoured by Hideyoshi and his court. They are of comparatively simple, yet very elegant design. Many of the lacquer utensils used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his wife Kodai-in, are preserved in the Kodaiji temple, said to have been established in 1606 by Kodai-in as a mausoleum for her husband.
