The figure of Tamonten dressed in Chinese style, with a sash band around his waist and his hair drawn up in an elaborate top knot, holding a miniature pagoda and a trident, the surface with some original pigment, some old damage and restoration

Lot Essay

Tamonten, also known as Bishamonten, is the guardian of the north quarter of the Buddhist heaven. His Sanskrit name is Vaisravana and he is generally represented bearing a spear and holding a pagoda.
